Before requesting a price match, make the comparison exact

You find the same-looking product for less and notice that another retailer advertises price matching. Before making a trip or placing an order, check what the promise actually covers. A lower number is only the start of the comparison.

For example, Best Buy’s price-match information sets conditions around identical products, qualified competitors and availability, with exclusions. It is one retailer’s policy, which can change; it should not be treated as a general right available at every shop.

Make the comparison exact

  • Product: compare model number, colour, capacity and included accessories.
  • Condition: distinguish new stock from open-box, refurbished or used items.
  • Seller: check who actually sells the item, especially on a marketplace.
  • Availability: confirm whether the advertised item can be purchased under the policy’s conditions.
  • Offer: identify bundles, memberships, coupons or other restrictions.

Keep the live product link and the relevant details ready. A cropped screenshot may omit the condition that explains the cheaper price. Ask the retailer to assess the exact offer before assuming it will be accepted.

Also separate matching a competitor at purchase from adjusting a price after you have already bought. Those services can have different windows and rules. If the later adjustment matters to your decision, obtain the applicable terms while they are available.

Finally compare the whole transaction, including delivery, returns and the service you actually need. A successful price match is not automatically the cheapest or most suitable purchase. The practical objective is a verified total and a clear set of conditions, rather than winning a comparison between two headline prices.
