A dishwasher’s filter is easy to overlook until food residue or an unpleasant smell draws attention to it. Removing the visible debris is only part of the job. The filter also has to go back in the correct position and lock as the manufacturer intended.
Find the model’s manual before pulling at the assembly. Some filters twist out, some separate into several pieces, and the release direction is not something to force. Allow the appliance to cool and follow its safety instructions before working inside it.
Keep removal and refitting in the same routine
Take a photograph of the correctly seated filter before removing it. Clear the lower rack as needed and watch for sharp fragments. Do not run your fingers blindly through debris or reach into the pump area as part of an ordinary filter clean.
Bosch’s illustrated filter-cleaning guidance shows a removable filter system cleaned under running water with a gentle brush, followed by refitting until the locking arrows align. Those arrows are a useful example of a positive check, but your machine may use different markings.
Use the cleaning method specified for the parts. Abrasive tools can damage a fine filter surface. Check for cracks or damaged mesh while the assembly is out; if it is damaged, ask for the correct replacement rather than trying to repair it with tape or glue.
Finish with a seating check
Reassemble every part in the right order, lower the filter into its seat and engage the lock without forcing it. Confirm that it is level and secure and that the spray arm can move as intended. Do not operate the dishwasher with the filter missing because the machine appears to drain without it.
If poor drainage, odour or dirty dishes continue after the routine maintenance, consult the troubleshooting guidance or arrange service. A clean filter does not rule out a blocked hose, pump fault or another problem.
Keep the manual’s recommended inspection interval in your household routine. The most useful habit is a complete remove-clean-refit check, not a hurried rinse that leaves an essential part loose.
