Photograph a Fading Receipt Before You Need Its Details

The receipt for a household purchase is still in the drawer, but the print has become too faint to read. Keeping the paper was useful; making a clear copy while it was readable would have been more useful.

Thermal receipt paper can be affected by its storage conditions. Epson’s thermal-paper handling guidance warns about heat, light and materials that can affect the printed image. Do not leave an important receipt in a hot car or assume that laminating it is automatically a safe preservation method.

Capture the whole transaction record

Place the receipt flat in even light and photograph the full document. Check the image immediately at a readable size. The shop name, date, purchased item, amount and reference should be visible where they appear on the original.

For a long receipt, take overlapping images or a suitable scan without cutting off the bottom. Keep an unedited copy. A cropped image of the total alone may omit the information that connects a particular item to the purchase.

Use a filename that you can find later, such as the purchase date, retailer and item. Store the image with related order information rather than leaving it among hundreds of unrelated photographs.

Keep the copy useful and private

The Australian ACCC proof-of-purchase guidance includes photos and photocopies among documents consumers can provide. That is Australian guidance; requirements for another country or a particular process should be checked separately.

Retain the original where needed and protect records containing personal or payment information. Share them only through an appropriate channel, not in a public review or social post.

If the receipt is already unreadable, contact the seller with the details you genuinely have and ask whether the transaction can be located. Do not alter an image to invent missing information. A clear, promptly saved record makes that later conversation easier without promising that a photograph alone resolves every purchase dispute.
